OSHA Federal Regulation 1910.178(I)(1)(ii) states “Prior to permitting an employee to operate a powered industrial truck (except for training purposes), the employer shall ensure that each operator has successfully completed the training required by this paragraph (l)”

  • Class length is dictated by the number of attendees and their experience level. Typical class length varies from 4-6 hours for 10-12 attendees. 
  • PIT Training consists of classroom lecture, manufacturer provided video(s), a pre-use inspection, and a practical hands-on operation test.
  • Classroom and video content include general safety practices, general truck operation, stability of the truck/stability triangle, calculating loads, load center, truck data plates, Class VII load charts, hazards involved in operation, refueling and recharging, and basic maintenance.
Recertification requirements per OSHA 1910.178(I)(4)
  • Refresher training shall be provided when:
    • The operator has been observed operating in an unsafe manner.
    • The operator has been involved in an accident or near-miss accident.
    • The operator received an evaluation that reveals they are not operating the truck safely.
    • The operator is assigned to operate a different type/ classification of truck.
    • A condition in the workplace changes in a manner that could affect safe operation of the truck.
  • An evaluation of the operator’s performance shall be conducted at least once every three years.
PIT Certifications

Class time length will vary depending on the number of attendees.  PIT classes are recommended to cap attendance at 10-12 due to lengthy hands-on operation practical’s depending on operator experience.

  • Operator Evaluations
    • Hands-on evaluation of the operator to ensure proper safe operation and competency. MUST BE PERFORMED NO LESS THAN EVERY THREE YEARS.
    • 10-15 minutes per operator.
  • Refresher Certification
    • Basic overview of safety, proper truck operation, truck stability, load calculations, refueling, recharging, and basic maintenance.
    • Hands-on evaluation on the truck classification to be operated is required.
  • Depending on the number of attendees, 1-4 hours.
